Queso

Hard rockers Queso are one of the highlights of this year's Summerslam in Manila.  We caught up with singer Ian Tanyao, to find out more about this multi-award winning seven piece.

Hello there, so who are you then?
I'm Ian Tayao. I'm the vocalist of Queso.  Just another instrument of the band

Give us a brief history of Queso:
We're a 7 piece band composed of 8 Toleran and Enzo Ruidera on guitars, 2ts Calinawan on bass, Biboy Garcia on turntables, Robert Dela Cruz on Drums,Cj Olaguera on percussion and me on vocals.  Playing since 95 we've garnered 3 albums.  Our latest, self-titled album is still out on the market, please do check it out.

How’d you choose the name Queso?
No particular reason.  We started calling ourselves cheese then eventually people called us Queso. No big deal actually.

What’s the battle plan?
Play music live.  Trust the force.  That's about it

What/whom are your influences (musical or otherwise)?
The band itself.  We inspire and fill each others gaps

Is there a message you want to get across through your music?
On my side as the lyricist, i just want people to have an open mind and face reality.  Improvise.  Cross the distant light, if you know what i mean.

What gets you excited?
Live shows - the lights and sound experience.

Is there anything specific you would like to achieve with your music?
To create meaningful songs.

Favourite gig so far, and why?
All of them.  As long as i play with my bandmates, every gig is priceless

Worst ever gig and why?
I cant remember.  I easily forget.

The perfect crowd is…
With kids who embrace the music.  Rakenrol!

What’s your policy on groupies?
No groupies, just friends and family thanks.

Do you have any special preparations or rituals you go through before playing a show?
I drink.  It's a nasty habit but i just cant help it.

Do you have a day job?  If so, what is it?
I edit videos for overseas talents.

With Summerslam fast approaching, tell us about the event and what it means to you to be playing it?
It's an annual festival - Big event.  A project of "Pulp" magazine.  Yeah I'm always excited to perform in front of more than a thousand heads.

What time is your slot, so people reading this can catch you?
Around 9, 10 pm

Any advice for festival goers?
Stay safe :)
