Brief Description Formed in the early days of the underground scene, Sandwash began as a raw punk outfit before becoming one of Dubai’s foremost music icons. Best known for creating the groove-core sound – a combination of vintage guitar riffs, anthemic choruses and sexually-charged themes. Continuously voted as Dubai’s best live band, Sandwash’s colorful personas, dynamic songwriting and unpredictable onstage antics make them one of the biggest highlights at every underground concert.
History/Biography Sandwash was formed in 1998, featuring the nucleus of brothers Michael and Jason. Promoted widely by the city’s previously un-represented punk youths, the band became popular as a live act in underground gigs. But while the punk kids went to every gig to support, Sandwash’s love for the unpredictable and interest in more melodic based music soon won them a new group of listeners. Today, the band’s punk heritage makes them one of the most respected live act in the country while the music’s depth and accessibility make them a favorite among a wide spectrum of music fans.
Since its inception, the band has had many lineup changes. Most notable among former members is Samer Munkfin Warlord, who played bass and co-wrote ’If You Open It Up", a staple number in Sandwash’s set list. While it’s true that some members left because they were heading back to their hometown, friends close to the band attribute the departures to Sandwash’s highly tensed "creative process" - which often sees the two brothers going at each other like two countries disputing a border.
Nevertheless, Sandwash continues to thrive through their forceful stage presence and punchy guitar groove.
Groovecore Sandwash plays their own style of music called ‘groovecore’, a form of rock music characterized by vintage guitar riffs, modern metal dynamics and soaring sing-along choruses. Groovecore typically features themes about decadent relationships and the highs and lows of being a 20-something in Dubai.
