Decade Ender Blog Post (Wed, 23 Dec.)
And so another decade will be closing its chapter anew to pave way for a new whole story. But before it does, again as it has become a tradition of sorts for us, allow me first to greet each and everyone of you a very Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year/Decade!
In general, this decade has been very fruitful for us all. Yes, there were many ups and downs, bumps and bruises along the way but we still managed to get through, and I believe so were you. One thing that was really worth remembering during the 00-09 period was, of course, the conception of this band back in April 2004. Me and our former keyboardist Pete, who by the way is happily married right now, came up with this initiative to form a ska band. It was then his idea to follow the 2 Tone route instead of the more aggressive 3rd Wave style. At first I was very hesitant because 3rd Wave was my first love. But eventually, with his incessant persuasions, I heartily obliged.
With our musical direction finally settled, our good friends Francis, Mike, and original drummer Andy then came into the picture to back us up. This was then the first prototype of what is to be The Superflirts. Our first ever rehearsal as a band was in a studio in Barangay Nazareth. With Francis’ idea, we decided to call ourselves Mary Palmer and the Rudies, thankfully it didn’t stuck hahaha. A month later, RR, our second drummer, took the cudgels as Andy left for personal reasons. With RR in tow, we changed our name to The Superflirts and played our first gig in a bar called Maxi’s, which is now a very famous joint for poker players here in our city. During the succeeding months, Patrick “El Cabinet de Aparador” came along with his fellow horny crew Bell, our original trombonist, and Bimbo to join forces with us. This was then the start of our very exciting roller coaster ride.
Through the course, we then encountered several lineup changes as Pete, RR, and Bell would leave the band one after the other for different reasons. Luckily for us, with the departure of good friends came equally the arrival of super good friends in Leroy, Henry, Kevin, Van, and Jayson. When these 5 guys came, everything, so the say, was then history. It was with them that the band achieved success and I think, humbly speaking, gained many loyal followers in and outside our city.
It was also in this decade that the first Superflirt baby came into this world. Bimbo and her lovely better half Kring gave birth to the very handsome Simone Isidore.
As what I have said awhile ago, this decade also brought with it major headaches for the band and in our own private lives. It was not smooth sailing for us, mind you. But what made it special is that we fought through it and chose to remain strong amidst the bombardment. Even if at times we were meandering, it was still very fun and amusing because we know that at the end of the day it will still be us 10 looking out for each other. Char!
So, as this new decade unfolds, we hope and pray that your love and support for us will still be there. You guys are the fuel that gives us the energy to move further. No matter what this new decade has in stored for us, we just want to let everyone know that we really appreciate what you have done for The Superflirts. God bless us all!
Hoping that all your fingers will be complete after New Year, Kokong
Jamaican Ska, British Two Tone Movement, Jazz, Cha-Cha, Rock n' Roll, Punk, Swing, Motown and class acts like The Skatalites, Prince Buster, Laurel Aitken, The Specials, The Selecter, Hepcat, Put3ska, Shuffle Union, Coffeebreak Island and Neighbors to name a few...
Why did you name your band The Superflirts?
It's because of how the way people dance to ska. They seem to look "flirty" when they shake their bodies to the beat. The word "super" was added to make a statement and to fuel the band's name. Combining them both with a little tweaking, we came up with The Superflirts.
How can I meet and converse with the band members?
You could go to our myspace account at www.myspace.com/thesuperflirts because all the members' own account are available there.
Bio
The Superflirts saw their humble beginnings back in the summer of 2004 in the streets of Cagayan de Oro City, Philippines. Arming themselves with the heavy passion for music and the general love for ska, the band pays great homage to the early sound of Jamaica, the British two tone movement, and the sultry beats of New Orleans jazz.
In the underground circuit, The Superflirts were first introduced under the banner of Corridor Music Group. It was through these underground events that the band made a name for itself which was warmly appreciated by the audience.
It was no stopping The Superflirts as they toured ruthlessly the roads of Mindanao in DIY fashion. They managed to land in magazines, given TV and radio exposures, and even headlined major events with other mainstream bands from Manila and Cebu.
Tempered with a smooth and simple beat yet catchy, it is not really hard to love the music of The Superflirts. Their original songs are always a favorite during their live sets which causes the crowd to non-stop dancing. They never force their music to be loved by the many, but makes the true fans appreciate it even better.
