KAZE Begins The Year With 6 New Songs! (Thu, 21 Jan.)

2009 was a combination of highs and lows for KAZE, with the release of our EP No Reason and a little after that, Bri’s departure for Canada. It was a huge milestone for us to be able to release a CD, but at the same time, the momentum was somehow cut short when Bri left Manila. That’s not to say we didn’t keep on moving--we still played at gigs here and there and managed to even do an acoustic set for a college radio station (shout outs to DLSU Live for inviting us last December!) with the help of our friends FG (guitarist for Gish, Xluthor and Mozzie) and Hal (who filled in during Sherwin’s brief absence).

With the dawn of 2010, I am happy to say that KAZE is back to writing songs and coming up with new material. I guess Bri misses the band so much and is frustrated with not being able to practice with us and play at gigs, but she’s still very much inspired to write songs nowadays. She and Miwa came up with 3 songs already, giving KAZE a fresh new sound which none of you have heard in the first album. We’re done with the demo recording of 2 new songs, and there are 4 more left in the queue. I can’t wait to finish all of them!

So. Demo recording. What’s that for? See, it’s part of our process to do draft recordings and rough mixes so we can listen to the songs and come up with more elements to add as we go along. Being a 7 piece band allows us to really experiment with so much since a lot of ideas are being thrown back and forth during the creation process. We’re not systematic songwriters, and the approach is always different for each case. I think that works quite fine for more variety, but there’s still a very KAZE sound to every single track.

Last week, I did the vocals for the first song that Bri and Miwa wrote together. I have to admit, it’s different from what we’ve done previously, which got me really psyched! For one thing, it’s written in Filipino, and God knows we need to write more songs in the vernacular. I like singing this one coz I can relate to the lyrics (I think a LOT of people will!). It’s the sort of song I’d dance to inside my room.

Second song was written by me and for the longest time, I didn’t have the lyrics for the second verse. I only came up with the second part while was on my way home that night and the words just came pouring in. Pressure does that to you! Haha. It’s a bluesy, gritty tune, and count on our drummer Chevy to come up with interesting drum fills to work with my melodies. I have to admit that I’m more of a chords and lyrics kind of songwriter and I’ll let my bandmates tinker with the rest of the elements. Boy do they have a lot of ideas! I like how the song had turned out, and I can’t wait for all of you to hear it!

Recording the vocals is really tough when you have a tendency to tongue twist. I think Chevy was able to save a bunch of outtakes during those sessions. Unfortunately, they also count as blackmail material. Oh dear! Anyway, that’s all for now. Next week, I’ll be recording the vocals of our 3rd song and hopefully we finish the rest by the end of January.

Back in the "Studio" (Thu, 21 Jan.)
Hey! Ho! Hello!

KAZE has officially started recording demos for a future album. Our drummer, Chevy, has setup a home studio, I haven’t seen it yet being in Vancouver and all, but I heard he has some very sexy things in there. Musically sexy that is, if there is such a thing. He might just blog about it and take some pictures. That would be a lovely addition to our revived website (www.kazeband.co.nr) that I hope someone other than the 7 of us visits. *wink wink*

We’re almost halfway through January and we already have 2 demos recorded! Song #1 which is a song in filipino came out really REALLY good, I think you will like it. (Yes, I am talking to you Mr or Ms or Mrs reader) It’s a song that a lot of people can relate to and I think it’s a fun song to sing along to when we play it live.

Song #2 has that bluesy KAZE-fied feel to it, definitely a song you’d catch yourself bopping your head to. It’s a song you’d want to close your eyes and listen to while you’re chillaxing on the sofa or wherever you chill and relax.

I just heard the minus one for song #3 which Faye will record vocals on next and it sounds awesome! It has this short part in the middle of the song that I just want to clap my hands to, as I would at a rave party as the beat gets louder and stronger...hmmmm. I’m excited to hear the song with the vocals! If only we could share it right away but then again, we want you to be excited for our new album.

The future looks bright for KAZE this year. :)

Will update as we go along.

Bio
The origin of the name was an evolution of the band's initial moniker, "The Curse" to "The Cause", that even managed to change into "D'COZ" (but it sounded wrong), to "Kasi" ("Because" in English), and finally, "Kaze".

Like when someone asks you "Why?", and you'd simply say "Because...".

"Bakit?"
"Kaze (kasi)."

No reason. We just happened.

KAZE

They are sisters (Kei and Miwa). They were childhood friends (Chevy and Faye). They were classmates from the university (Miwa and Faye), but some of them (Sherwin, Bri, Helen) were sporadically found in different parts of a place where the chance of crossing each other's paths is a little less than the chance of finding your one true love on Friendster. They all met online--in a message board in fact, and the idea of getting together to play music came about. There was no real requirement, no advertisements posted, no agenda to be followed. No real reason except for the fact that they all loved music. And on October 2004, just like that, the band happened.

Just like any other band they started doing covers and eventually proceeded onto making their own songs. With different influences ranging from rock, pop, classical, jazz, alternative, and a bit of indie and punk, their sound is mixture of layered vocals, guitar and violin dominant instrumentation, slow and fast beats, playful basslines, synths and light piano accompaniments.

They don't care about genres. Call them whatever you want. Call them pop, call them opm, call them anything and squeeze them into little sub genres that only you can understand. But when you come to think of it, all you have to do is listen.
