The Otherside Orchestra started out in early 2007, led by founder and guitarist, Wan. They were a 5–piece band back then, playing mostly psychedelic-infused rock & roll with some melancholic melodies thrown in here and there. It didn’t take too long before Wan spotted Haizal, the synth player at a gig and offered him a spot in the band. Haizal’s existence in the ‘orchestra’ made the band sound more electronic and slowly, the band was creating its own brand of music in the local music scene. They played a series of gigs around Klang Valley and peninsular Malaysia and have picked up quite a number of fans along the way.
Around October 2007, the band decided to open up a position for a vocalist as Wan, who previously sang a few songs in the band, decided to fully concentrate on his guitar playing. They tried a couple of female vocalists, including Ped of ‘The Oddstars’, who unfortunately could not give her full commitment with the band. They looked around some more and found Izwin of the band ‘plush’ through a friend’s recommendation. They auditioned her and decided to give her a shot. Her first test was the gig at Laundry Bar, The Curve, sometime in November 2007. The show turned out to be a blast and the ‘orchestra’ was complete.
At this time, The Otherside Orchestra had already recorded a couple of tracks for their debut album 'Electromancetacy'. Izwin recorded 5 songs in the album, while Wan did 2 and 3 others are instrumentals. However, during the completion of the album, everyone in the band except for Haizal, Wan and Izwin decided to leave the band due to commitment issues. But that did not stop the remaining 3 members from pursuing their ambition. Wan quickly rounded up a few extremely talented musician friends and in no time, the ‘orchestra’ was back on track.
The new ‘orchestra’ played a couple of gigs before they launched their first album ‘Electromancetacy’ on December 2, 2007 at The Annexe, Central Market. The new line-up has a different feel to it. More energy, more enthusiasm. This was obvious at the album launch when they played for a full house audience (and about another 100 outside the hall!). The response from the crowd was overwhelming. It was an eye-opener, complete with structured lightings and definitely full of life.
Since then, The Otherside Orchestra’s weekends are filled with gigs around Malaysia particularly the main cities e.g. KL, Penang, Johor Bahru, Melaka (the band has played over 100 gigs now!) as well as Singapore, where they performed at The Esplanade, including at the 2008 Baybeats Festival. The band is also featured in a couple of local tv shows such as ‘1,2, Jus’, ‘Homegrown’ and Channel V’s ‘Amp Around Asia’. With the encouraging number of shows under their belt, including two of Malaysia's biggest music festivals like Rock The World 8 and Sunburst KL 2009, the band is set to make waves in the local music scene. In addition to that, The Otherside Orchestra has also been selected as Converse Brand Ambassador for Fall 09 Campaign. Now, with Wan (guitar), Angah (guitar), Izwin (lead vocals), Haizal (synth), Shah (keyboard), Azan (bass) and Rashid (drums), together with Rifal (lighting technician) the orchestra is absolute and has finally arrived. |
