A couple of years ago I would not have had the knowledge, experience or even the guts to really speak about something like X Factor other than to say what most others where saying. Now my experiences with Shlepp Records and having been in this business for a little while I feel confident enough not only to speak about X Factor, but to speak with some wisdom about it.
The most damaging thing about X Factor is it's not real. It's the wrestling of the music game and it seems just like wrestling it has millions of fans and followers who don't seem to care whether it's real or not. I guess before I was one of them, I now however do not like the idea of a rigged game. When I say rigged I mean in the sense that the house always wins and by the house I mean Simon Cowell. My real gripe with the X Factor though is that although it can be quite watchable (for all the wrong reasons), entertaining and indeed even educational, it is unfortunately in so many ways unreal and unfair.
Firstly I have done over 350 shows in front of almost 2 million people and even with that experience I feel I am still just a baby in this game and have so much to learn to truly find myself and perfect my craft. Secondly I think I would be a complete wreck if my record company asked me to sing like Frank Sinatra, Beyonce or James brown, Why because it just aint me! Thirdly, I have been fortunate enough to be mentored by Stevie Eagle E and I was not thrust upon him like a bad Christmas gift. He was looking for someone like me and chose me, he understands what I am trying to achieve and our goals and ambitions together with our ideas more than often run in sync. God help me if was mentored by any of the X Factor panel!
Before I started to work with Shlepp Records I watched the X Factor like most others, now I watch it from the perspective of an artist, someone who knows the game and I watch it through very different eyes. I can see how Danny and Sheryl mentor many of their artist wrong, thrusting their desires and views on artists who have no choice but to follow bad advice. I see how Louis walsh views and perspective is that of someone who does not understand music very much, but understands media and how to make money. I also see how Simon although frank and many times sincere will never really be the man to find an artist to change anything, only more of the same, because he is also afraid to take risks and no matter how much he says he is taking risk he is just fooling himself and everyone else. It's like a Casino saying it takes a risk....Yeah right. However the whole premise of gambling in the Casino is to fool the punter into thinking that the Casino can loose, Simon in many ways does the same.
When I first met Stevie Eagle E, the first time we actually had a meeting and he spoke to me about my career I did not quite understand. I did not feel I did any thing special on the video that he was talking about. I was one of many other oriental girls on this video shoot and I thought they were all good. But he said to me that I had the X Factor, that something that you cant quite put your finger on but is there and makes it hard for people to take their eyes of you. To be honest it has taken me a long time to understand what he was talking about. At the time I was so happy just to be able to realize my dreams and ambitions I just shook my head and said yes to everything he said. Now though I get it. Stevie was not looking for just another great dancer, or singer, he was looking for some with the X Factor too, and you can have that without being a singer or dancer or even in entertainment at all. Some people just have this thing about them that draws people to them, or makes them compelling and unique. Because we cannot truly always put our finger on what it is we call it the X Factor. As Stevie puts it, it's the one thing the big boys cannot control or manufacture, they can find the best dancers, singers etc, but they cannot always find the ones with X Factor because in truth they do not know what it is. For example Susan Boyle. She has the X Factor and lets face it, how many record companies would have discovered her?
What Stevie was trying to tell me back then was that he saw something in me that separated me from the crowd. Until I understood that for myself and stopped looking for it in other things I could not really progress as an artist because I thought all the keys to success where in external things. In many ways we as people believe money will make us happy and so we spend our lives chasing it. We blame everything that goes wrong or that is not right on the fact that we do not have enough money and if we did things would be great, even though all the facts show us differently we persist in this way of thinking. So instead of working on ourselves and looking within for happiness we are always looking outward to things like money, friends, partners and things to make us happy. The same can be said of me I did not look within to understand the X factor I looked outward and so for a long time I could not understand it.
And so in a very round a bout way it brings me to the main reason why X Factor does not work for me. Now that I understand what X Factor is I realize that the program has never discovered anyone with the X Factor to date. In fact the whole premise of the show is not find someone with the X Factor but to find someone who can fit into what is already there and if you do have the X Factor the show is more likely to get rid of it than to discover it. None of the judges are looking for the X Factor they are looking for an act that will win the show or appeal to the British buying public. Therefore to me the whole show is one great big lie. Entertaining yes, dramatic yes, but a lie.
Being sexy why I'm not afraid - Ayi Jihu (Tue, 15 Dec.)
China’s top international R&B and Hip Hop starAyi Jihuhas come out strongly to defend herself against those that have said she is more of a sex symbol than a singer.
Speaking from her cambridge home the Chinese star laughed at suggestions that her singing takes second place to her looks as a celebrity. She said. ’When I hear comments like that I just laugh really because it shows a lack of knowledge and wisdom from the people saying such things. Most of all it shows a lack of understanding for how this business works. I am in the business of show business, I am not in the business of solely sound.
Everyone is given a talent by god. They are given obvious talents and talents they must discover and nurture to bring to the fore. These talents are just the keys to the doors of opportunity life will put in front of you. My obvious talents to some are my looks and sex appeal, and just because I have them, no fault of my own mind you, I do not see why I should not use these keys toto open the doors of opportunity life presents me with. Many people forget I was not discovered singing in a club or on a street corner. I was discovered dancing in a video.
I have always wanted to be a singer a performer. You only have to go back to my childhood days at school and everyone who knows me including my teachers will tell you that. They will tell you that is what Ayi Jihu was meant to be, was born to be. I was not so sexy and beautiful then so that was never an issue. I realized in my teens that I had this sex appeal and it mostly came out when I was dancing. Whatever ever dance I was doing and wherever I danced I attracted so much attention. I did not really understand it back then but now I am coming to grips with the fact that it is just a god given talent. I know that for a Chinese girl to move like me is quite rare and instead of thinking about it too much I just do it.
I used to be afraid of my sex appeal, of my beauty, I would only really express myself when I was out having a good time, but joining Shlepp Records and having this great opportunity to realize my dreams has made me understand how stupid I was. It’s like being ashamed of yourself because you are strong, or fast, or because you are smart. Having the right muscle structure may make you fast, but without the right training and dedication and practice you will not win the olympic games. Me being sexy and beautiful (and these are others words not mine) is one thing but it is not enough for me to achieve my goals in this industry and therefore I work extremely hard on my other talents including my singing
From Marylin Monroe to Madonna great entertainers and icons have all been criticized because of one thing or another, but they have worked hard and proved their critics wrong. I intend to do the same.
I would not be telling the truth if I said people comments do not effect me at all. Sometimes they do. It’s like trying to talk to a guy about something really important only to realize he is just staring at your breasts! That really used to get to me, but it does not so much anymore, because the more you speak sense and are capable of speaking sense the less his eyes are fixated on your breasts. I would never say certain thoughts in his mind will ever leave, after all, men are men, but I would say that he is left with more than just the impression of my breasts on his mind.
Being a woman is hard enough these days with all the pressures society puts on us and we put on ourselves. Being a woman in the spotlight is even harder. It takes a lot of self discipline not to kill ourselves with self doubt. We all want what we don’t have and it is easy to appreciate what we do have. I am learning to be happy with what god gave me. To appreciate them and use them to to achieve my goals without feeling guilty or wishing I had this or that. So in a nutshell I do not care what people say, as long as my fans continue to support me, buy my music and stick with me for whatever reason I am grateful and happy.
As far as being sexy is concerned, I love it. There is nothing wrong with being sexy like any gift it’s what you do with it that counts. I love the attention from men and women alike and I feel good and confident within myself about myself. So who cares what people say!
If people took the time to really listen to my album and lyrics they would understand a bit more about me. I am developing my own style. I am not trying to copy this or that singer, or be like anyone else. I am just trying to be me and as I progress I can see I am getting closer to that goal and getting better at expressing myself vocally all the time.
China's no.1 R&B star Ayi Jihu speaks out about global warming (Tue, 15 Dec.)
China’s no1 international R&B and Hip hop starAyi Jihuhas spoken exclusively to Stars Confidential about the recent developments in China concerning global warming. In an interview with Stars Confidential Ayi Jihu said: ’I know to many people I’m just a pretty girl who dances and sings on stage and therefore maybe I should not speak out too much about things such as global warming. However this is one of those issues that is really close to my heart. I grew up in a beautiful place with wonderful mountains and lakes and country side. Some of the lakes around my village you could look in and see right to the bottom years ago. Now things are not so much the same. As I have seen China become more and more industrialized I have also seen the environment changing for the worst.
When I return home and talk to my friends about this, they do not seem to bothered. Most Chinese people are just happy that China is now getting all the things they have seen on TV and heard about for so many years, but that has not been available to them. They are excited about the development and want it to even go faster. They are not concerned about carbon emissions, global warming and that kind of thing. I can understand how they think, because I was just like them until I started to travel around the world and see more things. I have seen many of the great things the West has to offer, but also many of the bad.
China is world’s biggest polluter
Hearing the news that China is going to cut it’s emissions is for me fantastic. I know a lot of people are skeptical, but I really believe that the Chinese leaders want to make China one of the worlds greenest countries, even with the phenomenal rate of growth we are experiencing. The great thing is that we can also learn from the mistakes of others.
This is one of those issues I intend to be very vocal about. I hope that as time goes by I can make the Chinese people more aware of this issue.
In years to come people will look back and see thatAyi Jihuwas one of China's important artists. In the music game timing is everything.Bad timing has seen many great artists not reach their full potential and great timing has seen average artist reach great heights.
The timing for Ayi Jihu, China and the world is right now perfect.Born in a tiny village in Sichuan China called Leibo, Ayi Jihu has risen to become one of China's most talked about artists both in Asia and in the West.
With China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Korea producing K-Pop and Canto Pop artist by the bucketful every year and most of them coming from big cities or being mixed, how did a young Sichuanese rural Chinese girl from village not many Chinese have heard of rise to the lofty heights of being compared to the likes of Western Icons like Madonna, Shakira and even Missy Eliot in her style of dance, music and mostly in her application of the genre that has proved the most elusive to Asians on a worldwide scale - R&B and Hip Hop?The answer to that question lies in three parts: Beauty, talent and timing.
Ayi Jihu is quite simply an extremely talented, beautiful and sexy woman on a mission and this has never hurt an artist trying to succeed. She is also uniquely talented in that she is one of the few 'true born' genuine Chinese artists who can communicate her music and dance to the West. When Ayi is dancing and singing she does not look (like so many Canto pop artists) like she is trying, she looks like she just is, and even to Western eyes and ears there is nothing but awe and pleasure when they watch her. Most importantly, the timing is right.China is emerging as the new global power house. It now has millions of well off middle class people and a whole new generation of young women and men with money and opportunity that were never there before. They are hungry for their own international star and identity.Someone who can mix it with the best of the West and still be truly Chinese.Perfect timing for an Ayi Jihu.
Ayi Jihu is curvy, Street R&B and real, most Canto pop artists are very white, skinny and pop R&B.Ayi Jihu’s lyrics and productions are provocative, risk taking, most Chinese artists don't even go there.Ayi Jihu's performance and dancing style is raunchy, sexy, street and urban. Most Chinese artists are gimmicky, copy cat and very pop. Even though the timing for Ayi is now, that does not make it easy, she is not flying with the wind, she is flying somewhat against it.
Testament to how spot on her timing was is the fact that barely halfway through the production of her album with little more than a MySpace page to verify her existence Ayi Jihu was requested to perform at the Sands in Macau (one of the world's largest Casinos). She was not only requested to perform at the Sands but was one of the first artists asked to perform her own music in her own style in a casino that before only used singers and entertainers who would sing the songs of others. It was not easy for her either, at first many did not take to her style or understand her, but with persistence and determination she won them over one by one until she was not only liked, but adored. This was the birth of Ayi Jihu to the Chinese public and she has never looked back from there.
Her debut album 'Try Me' is now completed and is already doing great business on ITunes in advance of its release in late 2009. She has shot two television shows. She has performed in front of over 1.6 million people worldwide. Her fan base is huge and growing all the time and if you Google her name in Chinese the results are staggering.Sought after by Clubs and venues all over the world she is constantly gigging and developing her craft.Ayi Jihu is learning and applying her talent the hard way.She has never been afraid to play the large arena or the small urban clubs in the UK and Europe as well as Hong Kong and China. This girl was born to sing and dance.
In doing so Ayi Jihu has become not only one of China's most talked about rising stars, but Macau's most famous international artist. Her online Diva Diaries blog TV show is fast becoming very popular and she has interviewed and hosted international stars like FatMan Scoop,Ayi Jihu is one of the world's worst kept secrets, everyone seems to know off her without knowing her.
So what does the future hold for this Chinese diva?If you ask Ayi she will tell you she wants to show the world what Chinese people can really do if they try and believe. She is proud that she is Chinese. She loves R&B and hip hop with a passion and feels her first album is just the beginning of what she calls 'the Chinese expression of R&B', and that her 2nd album in progress (Chilli Power) will go even further. She has a long way to go. As a nation she feels the Chinese need to 'come out of the closet' and really express themselves more. Her first album is about real freedom and although she knows she may experience some censorship and (maybe) lack of understanding by some in the Chinese community in the beginning she is determined to stick to her guns and do things the true RnB and Hip Hop way. 'I am prepared to take the longer route to success and keep things true' she says, 'Even though I have had many tempting offers to just become a Canto Pop artist like the others out there, I will stick to what I know and what I believe in'.
Ayi Jihu is not just about the music and the bling either. These are her words:
It is my dream and goal to bring my culture and people closer together with the outside world and help the peoples of the world understand, appreciate China and all it has to offer in a realistic way.
I believe I have been blessed to be in the unique position at the right time to help the new emerging generation of Chinese understand and integrate into this ever changing world which up to now they have not really been a part of.
I believe that although the people of the world are on one level familiar with my culture it is in a superficial way and I believe that it is only through true understanding and experience that East and West can grow stronger together. I hope to play my part, however small or large in bringing that experience in a true way to both East and West.
I am Yi one of the 55 Chinese Minorities.I come from a bloodline of leaders (Jihu) and my people although Chinese have a completely different language and culture. Many people do not even know that China is made up of many, many different peoples, cultures and lifestyles, they just see us all as one thing ‘Chinese’ which is good in some ways because we are one, but that one is made up of many little parts and this is the kind of thing I want to share with the world, through my music, dance and celebrity.
As Ayi Jihu continues to grow in fame in Asia she is also growing in fame around the world. The future looks bright for this young, beautiful and talented girl from Leibo China.Ayi Jihu could indeed prove to be one of this decade's most important and influential Chinese artists.
SC 100 beauty Chinese ArtistAyi Jihu's debut Album 'Try Me' has completely broken the mold of all previous Chinese R&B efforts. China has really taken to R&B and Hip Hop in recent years, but despite millions invested in some of it's huge artists no one has made an impact on the international pop and R&B scene, at least until now.
Stars Confidential nominee Ayi Jihu has taken the Chinese R&B and Hip Hop scene by storm with her debut album 'Try Me' Her lyrics and style have made her infamous in China as the Sexy Chilli queen who is not afraid to speak her mind. Ayi Jihu's live stage performances mixed with her provocative lyrics and dancing style have never been seen before in China and they have also made her a favorite in the West. She is now one of the worlds truly rising international stars and she is turning many eyes from West to East.

How did you link up with Eagle E and Shlepp records?
I met Eagle E on the set of shooting the music video 'T-shirt' for the rap duo 'The Alliance', Rachel (works for Shlepp) asked me to be in the video for it along with many other girls, so I went to it for an experience and did my thing in the shoot, Eagle E came back to me not long after and gave me this amazing opportunity to do what I love the most, sing/dancing, because he said I was 'special, and never seen a Chinese girl dance like hat before!' and of course I accept it without hesitation and we moved really fast in a short period of time now here we are!
How old were you when you went to England?
I was 11 years old
Are there any famous people in your family?
My auntie is Jihu Asha
What is your hometown?
Leibo County, Sichuan Province, China
How did you learn to dance like that?
I've always had a passion for music and dance from as young as I could remember, to dance the way I do happened when I came to England and was introduced to the music called RnB and Dancehall, I couldn't control my body as soon as I heard the music, and I watched many black girls/guys dance in clubs (as this kind of music is natural for them, they just got it when it comes to music or dance) and tried out myself, adding my own feelings and expression to it and it felt natural!
How do you feel about people calling you the Chinese Madonna?
I'm very flattered to be associated with one of the biggest star of all time, a strong, independent woman who has left a mark in the history for showing women how to be free and be true to themselves, showing that women can be powerful, intelligent and sexy at the same time, this has changed many people in many ways forever especially for us women. As she's such a role model there's a lot of responsibilities for being called the 'Chinese Madonna'. I'm also trying to show people especially the Chinese (because China is developing fast and the world is getting smaller) that it's time not to be afraid to express your feelings and be who you really are, not afraid to be disliked sometimes as long as you are true to yourself, not afraid to try, make mistakes and look silly at times to improve yourself, not to keep all your true feeling inside and let it eat you up, eventually you'll regret. Really the key is to be happy, in order to be happy you have to be true to yourself, the you that's hidden inside for so long. I hope people will eventually understand that through my music my dance and me.
Did you write you own songs?
Yes, I co-wrote it with Eagle E.
What is you answer to people who say your lyrics and dancing is too suggestive for China?
As I've mentioned before, China is developing fast and they are opening the doors to much more now, people have changed, the new generation are in the middle of this process, some wanna stick it to the old path, some wanna explore the new China and some are confused. Whether you think my dance is too suggestive or not, the way I dance and my lyrics are who I am, they're a big part of me because I express my feelings through my dance and music, that I cannot changed, my message to people is to be true to yourself, and I'm not gonna change the way I dance because some people may not like it, that is completely against myself and my message to the new generation, as I'm trying to show them not to be afraid to express your feeling through the things you like, follow your passion, when you do, do it all the way! It doesn't have to be dance or music, I chose to do it through them as that's what I am.
