HK2010: Back in Hong Kong, Gigs. (Fri, 12 Feb.)
Gung Hei Faat Choi, everyone!

Wolfling is back in Hong Kong.

I will be staying until 23 march and of course I am playing a few shows. (Naturally, any additional suggestions for show dates would be most welcome, too!)

On thursday 25th of february, I am playing at BC Unplugged at the Wanch in Wanchai. With a bit of luck, the coming edition of BC Magazine contains an interview one of their editors held with me.

14th of March I shall make a truly unplugged appearance with mostly Irish and Scottish songs at Prof. McKeowns early St. Patricks Sunday celebrations. By invitation only.

20 March will see me perform my original songs and maybe some quiet traditionals in one of the ultimate acoustic venues: Joyce Is Not Here, on Peel Street, SoHo.

I am still talking to a few promotors about additional concert dates. Hopefully I will know more about this after Chinese New Year.

Meanwhile, enjoy the festivities!

This spring (2009) it looks like I won't be making my by now almost traditional trip to Hong Kong. I might be over some time later this year.

Q&A
What is a mandoloncello?
The mandoloncello is an often rather bulky acoustic instrument, which has some similarities to the lute, oud, greek bouzouki, and italian mandolin. It is plucked with a plectrum, just like a mandolin, but it is tuned like a cello, hence the name. Most mandoloncellos have 8 strings, tuned (low to high)CCGGDDAA. Some instruments, like mine, have 10 strings, tuned CCGGDDAAEE. Sizes differ, from about the size of a big lute or an acoustic guitar, to almost as big as a violoncello. My main one is about the size of a lute, but with a much deeper, fatter "belly". I also own a second one that's almost twice as big, but I still have to fix that one up, and I want to find original parts for it, or have them custom made for me.
Are you from Ireland?
No. Everyone asks me that... I was born and raised in an old harbour town in the north-west of the Netherlands, called Enkhuizen. People talk funny there, but you must visit that town, if you get the chance- it's insanely pretty!
Are you from England?
er..
Are you from Scotland?
...
Why don't you sing in dutch?
I do, sometimes. But I find it harder to write songs in dutch, and harder to sing in dutch too, and far less people understand what I'm saying when I sing in dutch.
Are you from China?

Bio
Wolfling as a singer/mandoloncellist is best known for his loud and outrageous streetperformance. He flashes a big ugly grin when I tell him people call him “that Mad Irish Psychobilly-no make that Psycho”, and “The Alexei Sayle of Irish Music” - “I think you are a hobbit!”

But if you can catch him playing his original songs, you will see a different side of him altogether: somewhat shy and boyish, and playing very quiet, rather melancholic tunes.

Besides his voice and his mad grin, of course, his first instrument is the Mandoloncello/Liuto Cantabile, a 10 string giant mandolin/lute.

HISTORY

“In 1988, when I was 17, I simply ran away from home, ended up on the streets of Amsterdam, and started belting out some sort of crazy punkcrap on a cheap spanish guitar. It made me lots of money!"
He has been playing on the street ever since, although he no longer plays the guitar, because "one day I fell in love with a very old 10-string mandoloncello and taught myself to play music.”

Wolfling’s main claim to fame, however, came when he became the original lead singer for infamous Amsterdam punkrockers BREZHNEV, with whom he toured extensively and made several records from 1988 until 1996.

During his BREZHNEV period, he also started gleeful noise trio “DIE WOLFSKINDER” in which he played bassguitar, and did much of the singing. The style of Die Wolfskinder ranged from Sonic Youth-like trashy pop, laced with a touch of british folk, to heavy riff-laden rock a la Helmet.

Together with BREZHNEV’s bassplayer Motör(acoustic guitar), Wolfling(now on mandoloncello) coined the phrase “gangsta-folk duo” when forming the notorious Poncke Princen Kommando, named after a soldier in the Dutch East Indies who deserted during the “Policing Actions”, and joined a group of indonesian rebels. “Many dutch people viewed Poncke as a ‘murderous bastard and traitor to the dutch cause’, and we figured the name sounded cool,” says Wolfling, "One day, Poncke’s brother showed up at one of our concerts, and we had a few beers with him."

After Die Wolfskinder and PPK disbanded, and he left Brezhnev, Wolfling -once again on bass and vocals- went on to form Dröne, a three piece rock/noise outfit that sounded somewhat like a grimier, noisier reincarnation of Die Wolfskinder. They made some name in the Amsterdam underground scene, but disappeared again in 2004.

Since then, the Wolfling has mainly been playing his mad irish folk/trash/punk on the streets and in bars, although sometimes he plays his original, quieter songs on bigger stages.
