Wow, my first ever editor’s note – what does one say about such an occasion? How about with an introduction?
Hello there, dear readers. My name is Sarah and as of January 2010, I’m your friendly Managing Editor. Emphasis on ‘friendly’. I’m sure many 20-something writers grow up as kids, dreaming of the day they get their chance to manage a magazine, nay, a brand, like Junk.
Not me though. I grew up wanting to be a singer. In fact the earliest memories I have of my childhood in Seremban (in the state of Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia) was of myself entertaining a motley crew of my aunt’s friends in garish fashion. Then I discovered I couldn’t really sing. So I turned to playing an instrument – the piano. But years and years of frigid examinations in cold hotel rooms being judged by strangers while I played my scales turned me off big time. It seems like I was destined never to achieve musical stardom but despite my apparent lack of talent, that love for good music persisted through the years. And now here I am, running a magazine on music lifestyle. I’d say I KINDA achieved my dream. Speaking of love, February is the month of l’amour thanks to Valentine’s Day. Inspired by the crazy things that happen in the name of love, this month’s feature poses the question: can a fan love an artiste too much? According to research – yes! Exploring the world of groupies and stalkers was fascinating. Read more about it on page 32. If you were following the progress of our 2009 Junksounds Awards, you’d know that Indonesia basically pwned the other countries. In 2008, the Philippines did the same but a year later, they’ve slipped far down the ladder. We got three writers to offer their opinions on why that happened (page 38). Other stuff worth checking out: our Metric interview with frontwoman Emily Haines (page 44) and the revamped Rearview, now filled with live concert reviews. Find out what we had to say about ZoukOut 2009 (page 62) and Ne-Yo’s KL concert (page 68), to name but a few. That’s just the tip of the iceberg. The year ahead promises tons of great music moments (have you seen 2010’s concert calendar for the region? Great stuff!) and I’m sure the good times are merely beginning to roll. Whatever it is, I’m ecstatic to be on the ride with you guys.
Sarah Psst, follow me on Twitter - @sarchan. I talk about other stuff besides music too. Don’t forget @junkonline as well!
