WHAT UP!!! (Tue, 15 Apr.)
Guys and girls,

Sorry for the long silence on this site...our pals at AMP were like "Dude - update your page!" hahahahaha...so, since we absolutely love and respect our AMP pals so much for everything they're doing for Asian bands and musicians, I decided to drop everything and get on our AMP page and update it!

So the updates for King Ly Chee so far has been:

1. Our singer for the past year and a half - G - quit the band two months ago. That may come as a surprise for most of you, it was a HUGE surprise for us. But we have all moved on since then so please send us positive and encouraging messages instead of asking us what happened. We'd all like to know too...

2. Since she quit, we have been playing as a 4 piece band with me doing ALL the vocal duties as well as playing guitar. It is HARD AS FUCK TO DO!!! But so far the audience has been so welcoming to us and supportive that it has been great.

3. We haven't decided what we're going to do - either stay as a 4 piece or find another person to get back to being a 5 piece. Please be patient with us...we're trying to figure it all out.

4. For the mean time though, we've got some fucking badass shows coming up!!! Since we never give up on anything, we promised to play these shows and we're going to do just that. So these are the shows coming up:

ONE:
Apr 26 - We're playing one of the most exciting shows EVER - we're playing SUMMER SLAM in the Philippines!!!

TWO:
Apr 27 - We're opening for the GREAT Comeback Kid in Hong Kong!!! THIS IS GOING TO FUCKING RULE!!! Comeback Kid is the biggest hardcore band to ever come to Hong Kong!!! It's crazy!!!

THREE:
May 25 - We will make a formal announcement for what show we're going to be playing...it is a DREAM COME TRUE FOR ME...

5. And lastly...to finish off all our updates...From the Comeback Kid show on we will not be playing anymore shows in HK, because we are going to start writing and recording our new albuM!!! IT'S ABOUT TIME THAT WE START DOING THIS!!!

So that is the HUGE update from us!!! :-)

Thanks everyone for all your support. Our Filipino brothers and Malaysian brothers - we'll see you soon!!! WE CAN'T WAIT!!!

Stay tuned for more info soon!!!

Peace,
Riz

New songs...what's going on! (Mon, 15 Oct.)
What's up everyone...

Okay - because we love our Malaysian punk/hardcore/metal brothers and sisters so much, we've finally decided to start updating this site more often!!! Why you ask? Because I didn't realize that for some reason the music player on Myspace doesn't for our brothers down there! So fuck that shit - our brothers and sisters DESERVE to hear our music and lyrics...especially since they've been some of the BIGGEST supporters of King Ly Chee for years now!!!

So here you go guys...

Enjoy!!!

Peace,
Riz

PS: Thanks to Jana for letting me know that we should put songs up on this and letting us know about the myspace/Malaysian situation!
Its been a long time! (Sun, 10 Jun.)
Damn! Sorry that its been so long since we've posted up on this thing! :-) There just are too many things on the internet that need updating now...myspace, your own website, facebook, blah blah...all this stuff should just be streamlined somehow! Someone come up with software where you can post one message and it appears on all the things that you update regularly...that would be GODSEND!

Anyway - Asian Tour w/ NOFX went fucking awesome!! PLaying in all those places in front of all these wonderful Asian brothers and sisters was incredible...and for us it was proven once again that the Asian scene is just so amazing. The bands, the organizers, the venues - every place was just as amazing and just keeps getting better every time we come back.

Right now - we're back in HK and I've uploaded some of the newer songs that have been up on our site since March. The songs are "Unite Asia" (english and chinese versions) and a song called "My Family"...

Check them out...learn the words...go apeshit! :-)

Peace,
Riz

Q&A
How many frickin' drummers have you guys had?!?!?!
Good question!!! Hong Kong is known internationally as a "transient" city - where people come and go all the time...the same can be said about our band! :-) Since we started in 1999 we have gone through: 6 drummers and we're on our 7th drummer (his name is Man and he joined in June of 2006) now! The drummers we've had are: Ah Fun Ming Ah Dat Fei Hin Kevin Ming Man
Is Andy a model?
Yes he is! Just kidding! :-) The guy is just naturally a good-looking dude that's all! Having said that, I remember one time walking through the Causeway Bay MTR station and there was his HUGE damn face on an enormous Levi's advertisment! hahahaha...and the coolest thing was that he put his guitar hard case next to him that we both sprayed "King Ly Chee" on!
Is Riz just annoying to work with?
You can say that! He's a TOTAL pain in the ass! I ate his guts! I hope he dies a slow painful death and I hope he also dies fat and alone! :-) (You realize that it's Riz who's typing this right? hahaha...)
What's Start From Scratch Records?
This is a brand new record label that Riz started up with a bunch of local Hong Kong bands. The whole point is to finally get a label going in HK that will release music from HK's more heavier type of bands. Hong Kong's musical scene is hugely based on bands releasing their own stuff independently because there aren't a lot of labels to choose from. So we thought - why not get all these heavy bands together and help each release each other's records. So that's where this label came from...it works as a collective with decisions made together with each band's representative present.
Does Man listen to anything else besides extreme metal or hardcore?
Dude! We were just as surprised as you'll be when you hear this...for people who are involved with HK's music scene they'll know that Man used to be in the hugely popular local death metal band called Departing Cross. So his image is very dark - extreme metal worshipping-blast beat blasting drummer... BUT - this dude LOVE Mando-pop, Canto-pop and ESPECIALLY Andy Lau Tak Wah!!! WHAT?!?!? I can't believe it...but he SERIOUSLY loves this dude's stuff. One day we were painting our new studio practice place and we were listening to Pantera and stuff like that...then he pops in an Andy Lau CD and almost starts crying while singing along... DUDE! hahahahaha...
Is Riz gay for Coldplay?
YES! He loves that band...I don't know why that is surprising for so many people - maybe because I give off the "hardcore-til-death" vibe to a lot of people...but I actually do listen to a lot of different music. Some of my favorites outside of hardcore is stuff like Ella Fitzgerald, Coldplay, Asian Dub Foundation, and lots of stuff from the Indian/Pakistani part of the world...
Is G really a G (Gangsta')?
For real dude! She really is the queen of gansters in the district that she's from Choi Hung! She'll fuck shit up man - don't let those bare feet fool you when she's on stage. She can kick some ass...YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!! ***By the way - she just added this after reading what i wrote here: "give me fuel give me fire"...ask her what that's all about??!?!
What's up with Pong does he like to smoke weed?
No no no no...people always get his name pronounced wrong - it sounds like "bong" like "hits from the bong". But don't be mistaken - it's actually phonetically spelled in Chinese with a "p" so his name is actually Pong not Bong. And no - he doesn't smoke weed...he's straight edge. OH! That will be my next question here!!!
Who in this band is Straight Edge, vegetarian, smoking bandit, absolutely nuts?
Okay...the Straight Edge crew in King Ly Chee are Riz, Andy and Pong. The vegetarian in the band is the militant woman G (don't let her get going on a rant about why we should ALL be vegetarian! hahahaha...). The smoking bandit is our dear little brother Man who may LOOK like he's 30 but he's actually 25. The dude needs some sleep BADLY...Also - G has now quit smoking for 1 month now so congratulate her!!! Regarding the "who is nuts" part - that would have to be me Mr. Riz. I am seriously nuts...Man always says that I'm the most hyper person he's ever met. But that's also because he's like a grandpa! hahahaha...But seriously - if you want to see "nuts" then check out Man dancing when he plays that lame techno-crap that he loves listening to! hahahaha... Watch - G is now going to complain that I talk about Man too much on this thing. hahahahaha...TOO BAD!
Bio
King Ly Chee was put together in May of 1999 and the full story and details of the inception can be read in the various interviews we’ve put up on our site. One in particular would be the Fracture interview we did a few years ago...If anyone is familiar with modern-day Asian culture - you will know just how complex the circumstances are in our cities around Asia. Its hard to make sense of introducing an entire music-culture to a population whose main language is not English and therefore things need to be translated, written or sung in the most accessible language. For Korea - things need to be in Korean, in Taiwan - things need to be in Mandarin, for Hong Kong - things need to be in Cantonese. In general we focus on creating music heavily centered on social issues that may or may not be unique to our city (depending, of course, on the topic of the song). We have always been fans of message-oriented hardcore and less interested in the make-up, hair dye, mascara, rocking out to poetic gibberish "hardcore". November 2000, we released our first album named "We Are Who We Are". In August 2002, we signed with a brand new local Hong Kong independent label called Polar Bear Production and released our second record "Stand Strong" in December of 2003. In January 2006, King Ly Chee independently released a split CD entitled Under One Flag with a European political punk band called Good Reason and followed the release up with a tour of Eastern Europe. In June of 2006 King Ly Chee got together with a bunch of other local Hong Kong bands and started a brand new record label called Start From Scratch Records! To find out more about this exciting new endeavor check out: www.startfromscratchrecords.com and www.myspace.com/startfromscratchrecords Also, as of October 2006, King Ly Chee has been working together with US based record label Shnarler Records who has signed up to help release King Ly Chee’s most recent CD "Under One Flag" in the US! To find out more information on Shnarler Records including their releases and how they plan on supporting King Ly Chee click on: http://www.myspace.com/1189056 In the last 7 years we have played throughout Hong Kong and have traveled to other countries including several times in Taiwan, Korea, China (including Beijing, Wuhan, Shenzhen, and Guangzhou), and have completed two Southeast Asian Tours taking on the sights, sounds, culture of our bretheren in hardcore scenes of Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia. It means a lot to us when people outside of Hong Kong are into checking us out...especially fellow hardcore bands - it proves to us that hardcore is TRULY a global community, and not just based on USA. Thank you so much for your time and interest in Asian hardcore...
